There is a report in Rheumatology News about a study that indicates that biologics do not increase a patient's cancer risk. Great news!!!
V,
That is good news! I understand our risk for certain kinds of cancer are higher anyway; we don't need anything adding to that! My sister was telling me that MTX increases your chance of some types of cancer - I hadn't heard that and didn't know if that was so. I know there is some risk of liver damage. Know anything about MTX and cancer?
I did see several reports re: MTX use and cancer, but they could not determine whether the increased cancer risk was from taking MTX or from having RA. That is because all of the people with RA were on MTX. Go figure!
Well.....I guess we all have to weigh our risks w/the benefits of the drug therapy we are on.
Peace,
V
there are risks to all medications and every time we research and consider a new one, we weigh the risks and benefits. When I first started the Biologics (Enbrel, now Humira), I looked at the risk of cancer and then I looked at my life and decided that it was worth it. And it has been. and as you remarked, as well, we also have to take a look at the risks of not treating our disease with the attendant increasing cancer, heart disease and so on in addition to joint damage. It's walking a bit of a tightrope but in an odd way, I've come to appreciate it. It means living a life where you are more conscious of the potential for joy.
