My Mom has RA - Where is the best treatment center in the US?

My Mom
04/24/08

Mom has had RA for years, she was having Rimicaid infusions, however got histoplasmosis, almost dies, was in hospital for 3 weeks, now is on meds for histo. the rest of her life, due to this she can't take any of the really good drugs because they weaken her immune system, but she is on several drugs + prednisone & has woke up sick to her stomach for about 2 months, apprx. 5 weeks ago RA started in right hand, moved to shoulder, moved to hip, moved to back & now moved to left hand & still having problems with her hip. Rhematologist just told her to increase her prednisone which Mom didn't do due to the side effects & told her she could also take some tylenol. Please help me help her, she has no quality of life, always waking up sick to her stomach, always in some pain, now having severe pain & inflamation moving around. She has never been this bad, it seems to just keep getting worst. She has already had a mini-stroke & heart attack. I really need to find the best doctor that can do more than doctors she has seen in the past. Also has anyone heard of any natural remedies that would help?

Thanks so much!!

It may take considerable research to find the "best" treatment center in the U.S., but here are a few places that you might consider:

The Arthritis Center at Johns Hopkins, Baltimore Maryland

The Mayo Clinic Rheumatology Center, various locations

These places may also be able to recommend specialists and treatment centers closest to you, so ask around. I also suggest calling the Arthritis Foundation to ask for recommendations.

I am so sorry to hear about all the problems your mother has been having!  I hope for relief for her soon.  As far as some alternative medications or therapies here is a link that might help

http://www.healthcentral.com/rheumatoid-arthritis/c/53/9069/medicine/

And as far as finding someone who is willing to help her, have you tried contacting the arthritis foundation?  They can offer the resources you need to find a rheumatologist who may specialize in helping someone in your mothers condition.  I hope all goes well with her and pray that she finds relief soon.  Good luck, and best wishes!

Hi.

I have RA for almost 2 years. I use tylenol or an anti-inflammatory  on occasion.

I am not taking any other meds for my RA. I have it in most of my joints. I do eat a very limited diet. Vegies and fish. And try to drink a lot of water. I do eat fruit.

I recently met someone who cured  her RA using lecithin and i take 1-2 teaspoons of granulated organic soy lecithin in my salad each day.

I cannot eat wheat, potato, most nuts, bananas, tomato, tofu, soy sauce, rice. And chocolate is also on my "hit list". They all cause flares. You eat the food and it's fine. You eat it a second time and the antibodies the body made the first time you ate it cause a flare. That food now goes on the hit list. It comes under the subject of leaky gut and explains why foods are troublesome.

Have your mom do an elimination diet or as I did just go to a very simple organic raw foods diet with fish.

Look at

Hunter-Gatherers diet.          www.frot.co.nz/dietnet/reviews/mcferran08_hg.htm

The water cure.                   http://www.naturalnews.com/Report_water_cure_0.html

EFT free manual to download and subscribe to newsletter

                                       http://www.emofree.com/

There are lots of supplements for RA but I actually got the most benefit from eating simple organic foods. I found that most supplements worked for a day or two and then didn't. I surmised that my immune system was out of control. So things calmed down when I cut out offending foods.

Magnesium Aspertate with or without potasium aspertate capsules helped with pain in my muscles. 1-2 capsules. gave relief within minutes

I used EFT to heal myself of the fatigue associated with the RA.

Make fresh veg juices

add Whole Leaf Aloe Vera juice, Green barley powder, Arthrid to the juice.

and NO microwaved food! not even water!

I still have pain in my joints but it is far better than it was a year ago. I believe I can get it to go completely into remission.

Start reading and get back to me with your questions.

I have more suggestions if you need them.

The first thing your mother should do is get a doctor who is more concientious about addressing your mother's problems. I have psoriatic arthritis and it took me over a year before I found a doctor to make my myriad of symptoms serious, diagnose me and work WITH me to develop a way to treat my specific symptoms. You should feel your medical provider is working in partnership with you--not treat you like a number of $. Don't be afraid to tell him/her you do not feel your needs are being adequately addressed.

Im trying to cope with the same thing, my mum suffers from RA to and is almost imobile and like your mum it is getting worse and she has only had it for a small amount of years but the inflamitory is almost everywhere now. None of her treatments are working and have severe side effects, she caught flu one christmas and nearlly died. She has tried many natural remedies to try and reduce her pain for example exercising, taking long baths, cod liver oils, regular vitimans, lots of sleep. Maybe this is helping her to become more mobile but how would we know unless she stopped doing all that? Maybe your mum could try some of these things that is of course if she dosn't do already but I would say swimming helps her the most. And one excellent cure that dosn't last very long is going on holiday as humidity really helps loosen up the joints. I really do hope she gets better soon and make sure you look after yourself aswell as it really does affect you to but I know how hard it is when you feel so helpless for them and just want them to be normal and have a good quality life because it seems impossible and they have no aspirations bar getting better.
