Q: Does anyone have experience with collagen type ii, in particular UC-II

My mom regularly takes her omega-3s etc. for managing inflammation. Recently, we started her on UC-II and she showed more improvement with being able to walk and easing of pain in her joints etc. However, her blood test results are contradicting with ESR, CRP and RA factor all increasing. Upon googling, I find results that indicate UC-II is good for arthritis but also many sites talk about collagen-induced arthritis... Does Collagen type II increase RA disease progression?

When you say "we" who do you mean? Your mother and the family or has a rheumatologist been involved? If you are trying alternative medicine, you should make sure that your mother's rheumatologist is aware of what is going on so you can discuss it with them. Various treatments work differently for different people - what works well for you may not work for me and given your mother's test results, I'd be concerned that her disease is flaring.

Rheumatologist has been involved but she cannot seem to tolerate the classic treatments like methotrexate and she has given up on these but now given the results she is consulting with rheumatologist further.

With the alternative treatments of omega-3, glucosamine, MSM, all the factors such RA, CRP and ESR were continuously going down over the last year and she has become more mobile. Upon adding UC-II for the last 2 months, the numbers have jumped higher and hence the concern. Rheumatologist does not see this as a correlation to UC-II but I wanted to hear opinions about UC-II from other people's experiences.

As long as you've got the rheumie involved, given your mother's lack of response to the usual treatments, what you're doing sounds reasonable.  Unfortunately, I don't know anything about UC-II, but you may try asking the question again in a SharePost - they get more traffic that the individual questions in the Q&A section, so someone might answer.

Have your mother ever considered seeing a licensed naturopathic doctor?  Check out my post on alternative medicine for links to finding one. I've also heard that ayurvedic medicine may be helpful (also linked to in the post).

Good luck!  Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I've only seen a little bit of literature on this but heard from one person that her mother has been on it for a couple of decades and it really helps her.

Here also is a study about it.... http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2764342/

I just saw your post and wondered if you found out the cause of your mothers worsening blood test factors?  Was it from the UC II?

Also, you say saw some sites that referred to 'collagen induced arthritis'.  I may be wrong, but, I believe this just refers to the type of arthritis and does not mean arthritis was caused by collagen therapy.

My reason for the questions is because myself and my parents are thinking about trying UC II.

Would some experts also please chime in on this.

Thanks
