Q: Why are doctors so cautious in dxing RA?

It took several years before i was dxed with Ra. And i have  read so many others go through the same thing. I know docs want to make the right call on a disease. But why are they sooo cautious on Ra?

Hi Vickie,

I went through the same thing. Honestly, I believe some docs just don't understand the pain you are in. It is a hard thing to explain to the dr, at least it was for me. I was told "your getting older" so many times I could have screamed. I am 44, not exactly ancient! Also, RA symptoms mimic MANY other conditions. It takes quite the elimination period to boil it down to RA. Doesn't make it any fun for the patient!

Hope you feel better.

It took a long time for me to get dx too, and it is exstreamly frustating for all of us to have to go doctor to doctor before we get the correct dx. But it is a very hard disease to pin point, b/c there are so many things that mimic RA, and certain things don't always show up right away. But then there are some doctors...and i have had many in the past, that don't even try to help it seems. Some are too quik to just give you a pill-even though you know it wont do a thing for what is really going on, just to shut ya up...ya know. And RA meds are very powerful drugs, and they cannot just start somone one them-without a person fitting all of the criteria first.

I hope this helped you.

One of the biggest problems is that many who have RA do not carry the markers of RA in the blood. That's why the caution. If the markers are not there, they are not sure. They don't take alot of other signs into consideration. Also, the drugs used can be very harmful to the body. Doctors don't want to put someone on an RA drug if they don't have to.
