Q: Plaquenil no longer covered and can't refill!!!

I have been taking Plaquenil with Methotrexate for a couple of years now.  i have to take the brand b/c i was allergic to the generic (made me extremely itchy).  i just went to renew my prescription and was told that the brand will no longer be covered and i could not refill.  what do i do now?  have any of you experienced this?  what other drugs are working for you (besides injections, i just didn't want to make that leap just yet).

thanks you for your help, it took me 2 years of trying to find the right drug combo, so the thought of going through this again is very upsetting!

Hello, Andrea,

I am wondering if your doctor might write a letter to your insurance company explaining why you must take Plaquenil and not the generic form of this medication. Some people have had success getting meds covered by doing this.  I would also call the insurance company myself and explain the situation. While you are talking to them, you can ask exactly where your doctor should send the letter and if it should be sent to anyone's attention.  It may take a little time, but you may be able to reverse this decision once you explain your circumstances.

Peace,

V
