Q: Orencia questions

I have a couple of quick questions.  Is anyone, out there, currently taking Orencia or taken it in the past?  If so, did you expericence any side effects?

I had my first infusion, two weeks ago and I have my second one, tomorrow.  I had a severe headache and some nausea with the first infusion and was wondering if anyone else had this type of side effect.  Also, so you know of anything to help/prevent this side effect from happening again?  I appreciate any help you might have!  Thanks!

I take Vicodin before the infusion for the headaches and Phenegran and Benedryl IV for nausea and itching. The premeds seems the ward off the Orencia side effects.

I am currently taking Humira, only had 2 injections so far. I am not sure if it's working or not yet. I am concerned about the possibility of lymphoma so I discussed it with my Rhuemy today and she suggested switching to Orencia. She says its a very clean, noncontroversial drug (so far). That prompted me to start research on it and it says:

Common side effects of ORENCIA in both adults and children include:

  • headache
  • upper respiratory tract infection
  • sore throat
  • nausea

Now as far as how to reduce that, I am not sure what to tell you.  My first thought is to drink a lot of water before taking it, so that your brain doesn't get dehydrated (like when you drink alot of alcohol)  You might try that along with a few Tylenol and see if you can take Emetrol for nausea prior to your infusion.

Let me know if you find any relief with Orencia for your RA.  I am still trying to decide if I should go that route or not.

Thanks.
