Q: Real Sugar-vs-Artifical Sugar

I know this is a sorta off the wall kind of question for this board. But in the off chance that there may be a dietician or somone who really knows-i have heard that artifical sugar is worse for you than real..Is this true

the theory is is that the artifical sugar makes your body crave more sweet foods so you over eat the fake sugar, thus taking in more calories.  Thats what I have heard.  Use stevia from the vitamin isle .  Its made from a plant and has no calories, and its better for you.

Hi hope, i'm just confused on this subject. Because i have heard it many times-from people who say that their dieticians have told them this...that real sugar is better for us then the artifical, they say the artificial sugars are just bad. I have tried different artifical sweetners-i do like the taste of splenda-i haven't tried the one you mentioned yet, but i'm sure it is good! I just worry about all the stuff they say is so bad about them. Otherwise i would use the artifical sweetner in a heartbeat if i felt that is was safe enough. I wish i knew more about them!

My response to this issue of sweeteners would be thus: I/we have used 'Sweet & Low' for maybe 6 to 7 years now with no realized problems. I survived a serious H-A in 2003 and my hubby, adult son and myself all accepted a life-style change 'immediately' after. Apparently, our former diet was a big culprit of the former weight problems.

All three of us lost between 30 to 35 pounds each within the first year of our altered life-style habits.

I recall asking my cardiologist about artificial sweeteners we'd began to use and if they were a dangerous substitute for the real thing. I was told not to worry unless like thirty or more packages were eaten each day. Like so many things we hear about the resulting problems are hype or over-blown. Anyway, Sweet & Low is used daily in our home; prolly eight to ten packages for me.

As for wanting more and more? I certainly like to eat but my weight has remained about the same (134 lbs./ 5'6") for all of these past H-A years. I love the fact that I enjoy sweet stuff without being absorbed with the 'sugar' fears. Oh, I should mention that even though my cholesterol is fine, I do watch triglycerides. The phoney sweeteners along with my statins seem to keep all in check.

I eat lots of food but eat well; cereal-grains, fiber, steamed veggies ..love the new frozen *Steamers, soups, fruits, safe homemade desserts; *small meat intake other than salmon & chicken or turkey sausage.

May not be the answer for everyone but sure works in our lives.

Hi SherOnTheLake, I'm am sure glad to hear this, b/c it has been on my mind for quit some time. I have been wanting to switch to the artifical sugar, but have just been afraid to. But i think i can surely keep it under 30 packs a day. I wonder if Splenda would be the same as sweet and low? I really like Splenda. Oh yeah..those new steamers are delicious..just pop them into the microwave a few minutes and baw-la, now that i can do! Thank you for that info. Reply
