Q: diabetes and RA, is there a correlation between the 2?

I have developed diabetes, I have been diagnosed with RA for 5 years, I take enbrel, methotrexate celebrex. for RA. None of my family has had diabetes.I was wondering if it is the RA, RAmeds. or is it if you have one auto immune disease you will get others.

Type 1 Diabetes is an autoimmune disorder, as is RA. The two conditions have inflammation in common. In Type 1 diabetes, the body attacks the pancreas. In RA, the body attacks the joints.

Type 2 diabetes is not an autoimmune disorder, but the systemic inflammation caused by RA has been linked to insulin resistence and to Type 2 diabetes. I am insulin resistent myself.  My doctor calls it "prediabetic", but I have been able to keep it at the "prediabetic" stage for seven years now through diet. My father is a Type 2 diabetic.  Early signs of this condition include an elevated CRP and raised white cell count indicating inflammation.  My doctor told me that I would be diabetic within seven years.  That was seven years ago.  So far, so good. Changes in diet such as eating a lot of raw vegetables and fruit, avoiding white bread and white potatoes, eating lean meat, and moderate exercise seem to be helping me avoid Type 2 diabetes so far.  Hope this helps!

Peace,

V

There is some recent research (in animals only at this stage) that shows a positive feedback loop between inflamation pathways and insulin resistance pathways.  That *may* mean that there is some kind of link between RA and type 2 diabetes.
