Q: How long does it take for your hair to stop falling out after stopping methorexate?

I took methotrexate for 8 weeks for my Rheumatoid Arthritis and my hair started to fall out. I have been off it for 7 weeks now. I thought it would stop falling out by now. How long does it take? I stopped taking my folic acid when I stopped taking the meth. I just decided to take it again because I thought maybe if I took it my hair would stop falling out sooner. I just take currently 5 mg. of prednisone a day & I feel fine. Tried Enbrel & had a bad reaction.

I was on Methotrexate for about 14 yrs.  My hair did thin considerably and lost the natural body I had.  I have now been off it for 4 years.  It took a couple months for the thinning to stop, I never have gotten the body back in my hair.  It can be so frustrating.....

I personally was on methotrexate for 5 years, I lost over 60% of my hair. Before I could only get a pony tail holder around once now it takes about 3 or 4 times around to hold my hair. I have been off the methotrexate for 2 yrs now, after about six months the loss of hair did start to decrease but I still have not got all the thickness back to my hair. Though I try to look on the bright side, my hair was so thick before I had an afro no matter how long it got it would go out just as far, now my hair is sleek and beautiful, just like I always wanted! You can also try using thickining shampoo or one that stimulates growth.  P.L.U.R.  Peace, Love, Unity, Respect /Sincerly,Becky Sue

I was hoping you would say it grew back thick. My hair was really thick also & I have a hard time getting used to thinner hair. I always thought it would grow back when I stopped using methotrexate. I didn't even take it long. I guess I shouldn't complain because from what I have read online, many people with RA are having many more serious problems. Did you use a shampoo that stimulates growth? If so, what kind? Thanks! Reply

i took mtx for about a year and i had severe thinning of my hair also. before i had super thick hair and people always joked that i could give them half of what i had and still have too much! my hair did recover after about 6 mos of being off the 'meth' but it never returned to how thick it was before. which in some ways is ok i guess. :) i will never EVER take mtx again. my body simply doesn't like it. the side effects, constant nausea and feeling like i had the flu all the time wasn't worth it for me. but i know that isn't true of everyone, for some it works just fine with minimal side effects.
