Q: Orencia

How long does Orencia take to work? I was on Humira for a year. Simponi for three months and now on Orencia plus Methotrexate and Prednizone. I have had my tree infusions two weeks apart and one monthly infusion. I see no diffrence at all. They keep telling me it takes time!

Hi Patty,

Unfortunately it can take quite some time for biologics to kick in. I was on Humira for 6 months, even stepped up to weekly injections, nothing. I am now on Rituxan and felt a difference after my first set of infusions. Everyone is different and it affects people differently as well. It could take up to a year to take effect. Hope you get some relief soon.

Hi Patty

I started Orencia just recently and have already seen significant improvement after three months. I believe I just had my fifth infusion last week. From what I have read it may take from three months to a year. My rheumatologist told me he has seen a lot of people show improvement at the three month mark and then rapid improvement after that. After four years of putting this kind of treatment off I am amazed at the return of functional activities I have been experiencing.

I hope Orencia will work as well for you.

Hi Chuck, Thanks for your answer. I go for my fifth infusion this coming Wedsday. Orencia has helped the pain and swelling go away in my hands and elbows but not my knees. I went to my Dr. yesterday since I could hardley walk. He drained my knees and gave me cortizone shots in both. The pain and swelling are all gone! I had forgotten what normal knees looked like. My Dr. is hopeful that Orencia will kick in before the cortizone wears off. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Glad to hear Orencia is working for you and also glad to hear that it can take months to start working. I feel that there is still hope now.

I have only had one injection.  Not really feeling any differnet.  Hopefully after Enbrel and Humira not helping the Orencia will do the trick.  I hope so I am in a lot of pain now.  Sometimes it just feels like nothing is going to help.
