Friday, September 23, 2011 Wayne Carter asks

Q: For some time now, I have been having severe leg pain in both legs (primarily my calves but sometimes my thighs as well) during the night and especially when I wake up.

It doesn't always wake me up during the night, but I almost always wake up with considerable leg pain, and quite often I have to soak my legs in hot water to lessen the pain; Aspercreme has also been a big help. Usually, the pain lessens as I begin to move around during the day. Also, when I first lay down at night, my feet start tingling; it helps to lay on my side. My MD tells me I have good circulation in my legs. My chiropractor is a very good one, and he has no answers either. Help!

Hi, Wayne,

Does the pain feel like muscle pain or nerve pain?  I have pain in my thighs and calves, too, but I am pretty sure it is caused by the way I walk now.  My knees need replaced, and RA is attacking my feet and ankles.  I have orthopedic supports in my shoes which help a lot with that.  I also have some issues with my hips.  All of this together alters my gait, and my thigh and calve muscles get sore.  Sometimes they really hurt, sometimes they don't.  They are alwasy sore to the touch.   This is a different pain from the nerve pain I feel in my feet, which is a burning type of pain. Just wondering which type of pain you are having.  Sorry you are having to deal with this.  If you do have muscle pain from an altered gait, I would highly recommend orthopedic supports for your shoes.

Take care,

V

Thanks for the feedback.  Feels like muscle pain, an ache, not burning.  I did have plantor fascitis, but arch/orthopedic supports from Walgreens ($10.00) instantly eliminated that problem (as soon as I stood up after inserting them).

Hi Wayne,

This may sound crazy - I thought so - but try it! If your pain is muscle pain, like cramps or Charlie-horse-type pain, put a bar of soap under your leg, close to where the pain is. No rhyme or reason to it; it's an old home remedy, but I'm here to tell you, it works!! Good luck.
