Q: WHAT IS NEXT AFTER REMICADE NOT WORKING TO STOP PROGRESSION OF RA

I recently had eye surgery to take off a nodule which had formed in my left eye,  The opthathamologist attributed it to my RA, which I have had for many years.  I have been on Remicade for several years along with Methotrexate, Celebrex, DHEA, Evoxac, Restasis, vit. D (50,000 units once/week).   I also do water exercise classes for an hour four days a week, take Qigong classes twice a week and practice a few hours each week.  A massage from a Master each week for an hour and a half and sometimes 2 hours helps with pain control.  I do take AdPropo-N/Ap 100-650 at bedtime and ocassionally one during the day.  All in all I am doing very well, but am wondering if the nodule in my eye means the RA is slowly progressing (I had had a nodule in the same eye several years ago, but it was also surgically removed?  Are there any treatments which may do more to stop the progression of the disease?  I have seen some Embrel ads which say they can stop the RA, but am leary of such claims.  Age 77.   I have total knee replacements on both legs and had a total shoulder replacement in Februay of this year.  All surgeries very successfull and rehabilitation was also very successful.  Thank you, Debby Doran

It sounds like your RA is very progressive. There are always other drugs that may help like Enbrel, Humara and some newer ones. It's always trial and error. You really can't stop the disease. You can only slow it down a bit.

Have you tried Orencia? I'm on that right now and have been for the past six months. I haven't had my x-rays to see how the progression is, but physically, I can tell a difference in how I function and what I am able to do.

Wow. You are 77...not bad. And you can do all that stuff huh? I've had RA since age 27 and now (at 53) have added, along the way, Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis, Fibromyaglia, Reynaud's, skin rashes, stomach issues, sleep problems, numerous mobility issues and gained weight. I can't walk without a cane, even from the bed to the bathroom, and with Remicade and other meds I still have at least two miserable weeks out of four. Sounds to me like you are doing great!! I am a very positive upbeat person. What gets me going is people that are unwilling to recognise the fact they are old!! Not getting there but are old!! You are doing great as is. Just hang on to that little rope for as long as you can.
