Q: Positive for RA waiting for appt.

I have been in pain tired depressed and recently went to my doc had labwork and was told I am positvie for RA factor. Now I am waiting for a referral to see a specialist. I have spoken to a nurse in my docs office and she was not helpful told me my labs were sent to a rheumatologist and if they accepted me as a patient they would contact me. That was a week ago and I still have not heard anything. How long will it take to make the appt. And what happens if rheumy will not see me?

I'm so sorry to hear what you're going through. The initial process of diagnosis can be long, hard, confusing, frustrating, and stressfull. On top of that, oftentimes people are experiencing bad physical symptoms because treatments haven't been started. All together, this is a bad mix mentally and physically.

Hang in there. Get plenty of rest. Find support from others. I promise that things will get better once you get on a treatment plan (althought that also may take some time to figure out what works best).

You will have to be your own best advocate with the doctors. If you need a referral to see a specialist, you're at the mercy of your primary care doc. I wonder if you can ask for the referral and go ahead and make an appointment with the rheumatologist instead of waiting for lab reports to go to rheumy and waiting on them to contact you. They may treat you like a pest but you're the one suffering! Let them know how much you're suffering and that you need to be seen right away.

Did you primary doc give you anything for pain in the meantime? Steroids may also be used to knock down inflammation for the short term.

Hi. If it's been a week, I'd check with the referring doctor to make sure the referral actually got sent. If it has been sent, I'd begin calling the Rheumy's office and trying to get an appointment.  Be persistent. Don't let them put you off. Keep pushing until you have an appointment time in hand!

The process of finding a Rheumatologist may or may not be a maddening process. I was diagnosed back in April of 2009 (I'm a sero-negative RAer...nothing shows up in my bloodwork) and I had to see three Rheumatologists before settling on my current Rheumy.

I think you'll find lots and lots of good information and support on this site. I know I have.

Hang in there!
