Q: I have RA. My RA doc said I need to take Enbrel. Has anyone else been in the same situation and taken something more affordable that helped? Please, I really need to know. Thanks so much!

Hi Kathy,

I don't know your insurance situation, but definitely check out any financial programs which the makers of Enbrel might offer.  You never know what help is available until you inquire.

I may not be the best person to answer.  I've been taking Enbrel since March 2005.  My doctor had me try Remicade first, and I didn't want to, and was very scared.  But he said I was risking serious joint damage (according to lab tests, my RA was "very aggressive" and I had already had wrist damage).  I had an unpleasant, though not dangerous, reaction to Remicade and refused it after the second infusion.  I didn't go back to the doctor for several months while I thought about it (and also realized that the Remicade really worked - it took away ALL my pain and inflammation for the two months it was supposed to).  By the time I was ready to try something, I'd thought about it, researched it, and talked to people (like you are doing) and wanted to try Enbrel as the least of all the evils (I had high liver enzymes so he skipped right over all the usual first-line meds: methotrexate, plaquenil, etc.)

i've had a few ups and downs with Enbrel but mostly it has worked GREAT for me! I have had to take it less often than prescribed at times, or stop for a week or two for infection, or stop for a month for surgery, but I'm happy with it.

Every one is different, and it may take some time to find the best option for you.  If the cost is a problem, you may be able to get some help from the pharmaceutical company (insurance has not been a problem for me).

Some painkillers may help the pain, but they won't stop the disease.  Some anti-inflammatory meds may help and if you can get away with not taking a biologic without getting worse, that may be your choice.  But if you're like me, you'll find a whole new life with the right meds!

Hi Kathy,

Enbrel is amazing and does help with pain, fatigue, and joint damage.  I have RA and Lupus for 14 yrs.  I also take Arava due to a recent aspiration of the elbow joint; all is good.  We all should not have to take prednisone, unless totally necessary and then only by injection.  I went on Enbrel because I suffered three flares which affected my left lung with pleurisy.  I have not had this since Sept, 2010 and have been on Ebrel for 9 monthsKiss  I also exercise with routine of Yoga, Cycling and weight lifting. Keep moving, Laughing and give and surround yourself with LOVE.  God bless.

Kathy, Enbrel has a program to help with cost through your RA, check this out, I have paid a $30 co-pay through out my 9 months, and it will last for 12....well worth it.

Cyclegirl,

Thanks for your answer & encouragement. I'm curious about the program you referred to with your $30 co-pay. The only one I know of is the Encourage Foundation. I have applied and would be eligible for partial assistance if I take Medicare Part D (the prescription part) first (I only have A & B at this time).

Even then, each year, my personal out-of-pocket monthly contribution starts around $800.00 for the first few months and gradually decreases to around $100.00. I was told that the actual drug company itself does not offer an assistance program, because it would look like they were trying to promote their drug by getting more people to take it (like what drug company DOESN'T?)

I'm so confused, but all I know is I am in moderate to severe pain every day and there's got to be something affordable I can take that helps!

Please let me know what assistance programs you know of. I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks, Kathy
