Q: Has anyone out there considered or gotten Social Security Disability for RA?

I've had RA for over 10 years now and am finding it increasingly difficult to deal with a demanding full time job and family. I am going through menopause, and think the estrogen reduction has made the RA go haywire. I am taking Remicade, metho, nsaids and pred daily and still am in constant pain.

One of our other users recently wanted information about SS and RA - I'll link to that question instead of repeating the information.

Hi Tracey,

I was just looking through questions from this week.  Social Security Disability is a popular topic and here is another question with varying answers.  Thought you might like to read this one in addition to the one Lene pointed you to.

I have RA and have been on social security disability since 1986. At that time I had had RA for about 12 years.  I didn't have any trouble getting mine but I know some people do.  I had a great doctor who helped me with all the paper work. I had to see a social security doctor but that was all.  After you are declared disabled you must wait six months before you get your first social security check but you will draw SSI until your six months are up.  I applied in July of 1986.  I was notified in October that I had been approved and they said that I was disabled in July when I had applied so I drew my first SS check in Janurary 1987.  But I recieved a ssi check lump sum to cover from July to November in November and received ssi for December that year.  Also if you are approved, you will received a check for your children under age 18.  Hope this helps

Nan

I have had RA for 10 years and could not continue working so I applied for disability in August. I was aproved in February. The best advice would be hire an attorney and have good doctors to help you fight it. I had no problems getting it.
