Q: Safety of water, vinegar and baking soda cocktail for treatment of gout

My 32 year old son has suffered with gout for the past 10 years. He takes the required medications and follows a restricted diet but still experiences flareups. It was recomended to him (by a friend) to drink a daily cocktail consisting of water, vinegar and baking soda. Less when no symptoms and more when symptoms are present. He has tried this and feels relief and that it is working to relieve symptoms. My question is just how safe is this treatment on and ongoing basis and is this treatment proven to work? Your input is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi leonemarie,

I don't suffer from gout and have not tried this remedy.  But in a quick google search, I found this excellent article which discusses gout, traditional treatments, folk remedies, etc.

It seems that with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) there is a risk of high blood pressure and other problems associated with high sodium intake.  Certainly your son should discuss this treatment approach with his rheumatologist who is the expert on gout.

Thanks for your question.
