Q: Delusions & Hallucinations: What's a Good Medication Regime

I am requesting your expertise & experience in figuring out which medications are most used and effective in treating delusion & hallucinations in individuals diagnosed as schizoaffective.  A few years ago, I allowed my now 24 yr old son to get his lip size reduced by a cosmetic surgeon.  My son provided the doctor with a picture of a rapper named "NAS".  The doctor told my son he could not promise his lips would be that small and explained why but said he would do his best. My son was not diagnosed as schizoaffective at that time and his lips were not made the size of the rapper's in the picture.  However, my son thinks the rapper "NAS" has powers over not only him but others too because of the surgery. For example, if you tell my son something he does not agree with, there are times when he says "NAS" is doing it. NAS does not tell him to do anything but make bad things happen because his lips look like the rapper. Long story short, when my son was on Risperdal, it seems these symptoms minimized or disappeared. Is this a delusional or hallucination symptom?  My son is now on Haldol injection 200mg every 4 weeks, and is talking about NAS again.  What other medications are being used to treat this type of symptom.  I would like to discuss other options with the psychiatrist.  Can Risperdal or other medications for this symptom be given in an injection?  Your suggestions are greatly appreciated. I do not think the Haldol may be working...

Ellen is right - you ended up on the wrong site.  We do have a Schizophrenia site where you'll be able to find more information about the disease and ask questions of people you know much more about it.

Good luck! I hope your son gets better.

I think somehow your question ended up in the Rheumatoid Arthritis section of Health Central. You might want to search HealthCentral using their box at the top right, and post your question on an area related to mental health to reach folks who might be able to help.

I have been having problems with the site too, ending up in places and topics I never requested - not sure what to do about it!

Good luck ...
