Q: What effective prescriptions that offer pain relief for ostearthritis knee pain instead of Celebrex?

My 64-yr old husband had total knee replacement 6-7 weeks ago.  Are there any prescriptions that would be just as effective or maybe even more effective in assisting with most of all, pain relief and decrease in swelling --- that would have less life-threatening possibilities; such as heart attacks, strokes and gastrointestinal bleeding, etc??

Thank you, for your expedient responses....Sincerely, Caring wife

There are alternatives to Celebrex, though other agents that provide effective relief for osteoarthritis have similar or additional side effects. Celebrex is a special anti-inflammatory drug that minimizes the risk of stomach lining irritation and bleeding compared to similar medications such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or ketorolac (Toradol). Also, the risk of stroke and heart attack is found in those patients taking Celebrex for more than 18 months and in high doses (more than 200 mg daily). Another option for pain management would be narcotic medications (percocet, codeine, etc.) but these can impair alertness and they carry the risk of addiction.
