I actually get canker sores all the time.  If you are on methotrexate it is important to tell your rheumatologist who may want to up your folic acid, believe me it helps.  If you are not on methotrexate you will want to let your primary physician and your rheumatologist know as well to make sure that there is no underlying condition.  Good luck and best wishes!

Hi In Pain!

Yes, Me too!!  I have had the worst canker sores for 6 months and have been searching for a reason but only suspected Orencia.  I plan to report it to the drug company...I hope you do too!

Thanks for the post! I have tried b12, iron, folic acid, eliminating foods, etc.!

Good Luck!

Hi

I found your question while reseaching RA and canker sores. I too take Orencia and have noticed canker sores ever since I started taking it last year. I used to take Methotrexate years ago, nearly 10 now - It was stopped after my liver panel was showing changes that were harmful if continued.

I have found that the over the counter natural remedy called: gentian violet, helps these nasty things. You can get it at any pharmacy, (for only a couple of bucks also) you may have to have someone help you locate it though as it's not a well known product, and as well could be behind where the pharmacists work. You don't need a script though. It's also a bright purple color that will come off your skin, but not clothes or anything else so be careful with it. It's the only thing that helps my canker sores though.

Back to your question - do your sores ever make your throat hurt? I have cankers in my throat and am wondering if that's why I have a sore throat.

It may not be related to the drug just a coincidence. I had the canker sores before the DR realized i had RA and before the treatments began. He put me on folic acid along with methotrexate, solindac and plaquenil. the canker sores along with sorensens and asthma can be part of the RA package unfortunately.

I used to have bouts of canker sores from since I was a child. I do not remember ever having a week off without canker sores - this was in India. Then I came to the US and the sores continued. Doctor asked me to take B12 which did not help. I learnt to control it by gargling with Hydrogen Peroxide and it dramatically reduced the duration of canker sores. Then I found B-150. I started taking that and canker sores all but went away. Just started Mtx about 2 weeks back and bamm - canker sores return in droves. I am convinced it is related to Mtx and how it interacts with Vitamin Bs. Now I am going to take B-150 daily along with 800mg of Folic acid. Hopefully that will make a dent. But I know that Mtx resulted in huge number of sores coming back.
