Hi, John,

Sorry to hear you have had such a difficult time getting a diagnosis.  How furstrating!

Fibromyalgia can be debilitating.  Has your doctor prescribed any medication to help w/the fibro?

I see a NP who is very bright. She diagnosed my fibro and sent me to a rheumatologist.  I also have inflammatory osteoarthritis, and generalized osteoarthritis, so the rheumy treats it all. That works out well! Smile

Sounds to me as though you have not found the right combination of meds to manage your pain.  Do you have RA also, or another type of arthritis?

Most people I know who have fibro see a rheumatologist.  Is your GP treating your fibro?

Beleive it or not, even some rheumatologists do not recognize fibromyalgia, although their professional association does recognize it as a rheumatic disorder.

Health Central does have a Fibromyaliga community, too. You might want to check that out.

Let us know how you are doing, and don't hesitate to ask any questions.  We might not know the answer, but we will share what we do know.

Best Wishes,

V

fibromyalgia is a hard diagnosis to make - it's only very recently that more doctors are becoming more aware about what's going on. For years/decades, people living with fibromyalgia have been told that it's all in their heads. I'm very glad to hear that you have been diagnosed finally and referred to a pain clinic - check out our post from a pain specialist for a bit of an introduction to the field. You may also find my post on pain management helpful. I'm also glad to hear that you have a referral to a psychologist, as counseling can be an essential tool in developing effective coping skills. I saw a psychiatrist for several years and it did wonders for me and I still use the skills I learned during my counseling. You may also want to check out an audio program called Mindfulness for Beginners, which introduces the concept of mindfulness - incredibly helpful when you have a chronic illness and especially with fibromyalgia - as well as introducing you to a couple different types of meditation.

I'd also suggest that you check out the fibromyalgia area of our Chronic Pain site for more information about the condition and to connect with a community of people living with the condition and other forms of chronic pain. Especially check out Karen Lee Richards' posts - she's the Expert on that site and writes a lot about fibromyalgia. The more you know, the better your chances of living well.
