Is Humria a drug you would or would not take?
do you feel safe taking Humira, after reading the story on this site?
Hey susan
I took Humira for over year and had absolutely no side effects. Most biologicals have the same side effects, none of its pretty. But most doctors would tell you that the benefits out weigh the negatives. Humira didn't work that well for and I now take enbrel and I take twice the reccommended dose for a year and half. I know the risk but I have very little pain with it combined with arava. Most days I am pain free. But it is your choice and you should make an informed one. Also this is just one person so don't go on one person opinion.

If your symptoms are to the point where it's drastically affecting daily life and you're getting in danger of or already have permanent damage (i.e., bone erosion), and other meds aren't working for whatever reason, then Humira may be a good choice. You have to be careful when reading individual stories. I find that more often than not, the bad stories make the press/websites at the exclusion of the many more good stories. So be careful extrapolating from a case of one person. You can find positive stories of Humira and Enbrel (a related drug) all over the RACentral site (which I find to be one of the most positive out there). If you are otherwise healthy (besides arthritis) then you are probably a good candidate for Humira. And if your doc recommends it, it's done with careful consideration for your well being. There are possible side effects but the vast majority don't experience the major ones.

Hi Susan
I took it for 3 years. I would take it again. I had much improvement and no side effects except that I needed to do what I call "preventative first aid".
Basically, use bandaids and neosporin a lot, especially at bedtime if there's a small cut or nick, etc. And wash hands constantly to avoid viruses. And take your vitamins.
I vote "yes".

Thanks Kelly, I've been on it for about 3 years and no problems yet, but I 'm still having a hard time with my right knee drained every three months and cord. shots, now they are sending me to Pitts. Pa. To have that checked out by the best so they say. I go June the 8th and from there I think it'll be the knife. Lol. Tanks for the info. You no longer take Humria or what?

Two months ago, my dr. suggested changing to Enbrel since I have never (also 3 years) seen a moment of remission. I guess they think I should have by now... Anyway, I'd give anything to have that choice back today. I wrote about this on my new blog just this week. You can look at it on blogspot. I am rheumatoidarthritiswarrior@blogspot.com. Please keep me updated about the knee. Sounds nasty for ya.
take care, Kelly

Hi Kelly, It would not let me into it to read. Are you saying that you like the Humria alot better or no. I've herd alot of people do not like the Enbrel . Would you go back to the humria or what? Today she wanted me to read up on Remicade and take that in to mind. I've doctored for this shit from 1999 along with having lymes for the past 3 years. they say once you get bite once they tend to come back for more they leave a sweet sent to you. I will get back to you and let you know how the knee goes it might be the best thing thats happened to me, for theres been so many days I could not even get out of the bed when I flair I do it right. At one point I did pred. infusions that last for 2 hours that was fun days and very long 2hrs down 2 there and 2 back
made me sick. I hope your doing well with your R/A and that all your meds are working for you. Keep in touch.

sorry. I think it's because I was in there posting. wish i knew for sure. please try again.
Humira was a miracle, but not a cure. so the dr. said try Enbrel. Anyway the Enbrel is a once a week shot and the H. is a every other week one. (Lasts for 2 weeks). For me, I used Humira every single week. So, Enbrel is like sorta cutting my dose down. sigh. Good Luck,
Kelly

Good morning Kelly, made my trip as a matter of fact I made 3 trips out there and back 3 different doc. They all said the same thing to high of a risk basely they said I'll need a knee replacement 2 years down the road anyway, so why go through all this now at a very high risk when I'll need other done. I take way to many meds for this to be safe. Take me off the meds. to do it then you have the chance of magior flair ups, so I guess I live with if for now. Do not get me wrong they will do if it is what I want but they do no agree with it if thats what I want. So I 'll use my head for now and wait it out for as long as I can. That's the thoughts of 4 different Doc. now so they must know what they are doing . So HOW ARE THINGS GOING FOR ?
Yes. I still feel it would be worth it.

I did take it for awhile and felt OK with it, despite knowledge of the risks at the time I was willing to take it to remain able to work & care for my family. Unfortunately, its benefits were not lasting for me and it became not worth the cost & risks to continue. However, based on my experience I would try it again. My 21 yr old son is just starting it for treatment of Crohn's disease.

I have been on Humira for 1 year and for the first 3 or 4 months it really helped as I was weaning myself off of Predisone. Then it seemed like it only helped about 7 to 10 days and wore off before the next injection. Now it only helps about 5 to 6 days sometimes less. I am going to see my Doctor soon to discuss my obtions. I have other health issues and I don't think the benefits outweigh the risks of taking Humira for myself. I think if you don't have other health issues then its worth trying.

Hi Susan,
I have been on humira since Nov 07. When i first started taking it ,it really seemed to help and soon as i took the first injection. I had been taking it for a year, in Nov 08, i had to go to ER with breathing problems. I have never had breathing problems n the past, even though i had been a smoker for years. They admitted me where i stayed for a month fighting pneumonia, asthma, and copd. They took me off the humira while at the hospital, along with the arava.
After fighting for my life and staying on oxygen the entire time i was there and a month after i came home i finally wa able to give up the O2. I saw my rheumy a few weeks after i got released, (he is 100 miles away in Atlanta, Ga) so he didn't take care of me during my stay at the hospital. He put me back on Humira which i have now been back on since Jan. I don't think it is helping that much anymore.
If medicaid wasn't helping me pay for it, i wouldn't continue taking it.
It is a great drug, but if you are prone to infections i would not take it. I was scared to death to start back on it, but as they say the positives are suppose to out weigh the negatives. Good Luck,
Lisa

Hi, Question why do you doc. so far away? DO you go there every three months or what? I know when your on all these meds. you are to be watched every three months and have all blood work done on a reg. bases. The blood work is every important while doing these meds. I love my R/A DOC and even the one I had before this ,but he was to far to travel every three months and when I had really bad flare ups, so I looked long and hard for another good one in my area and she's great. It's just like going to my old one whom I did travel there for 11 years, but it just got to be to much or I just got to old LOL. Always when looking for your new Doc. make sure it's one who cares and ask you lots of questions and who lets you speak as much as they do and when that happens you'll know they care and are not just in it for the money. good luck.

My experience with Humira has both been positive and negative.
After my first series of shots, I "almost" felt like myself again with a huge surge of energy and felt pain free. I was able to work full time again and felt really well. Unfortunately, in between every injection, I was hit with some kind of infection such as a sinus infection that led to a serious ear infection resulting in another perforated eardrum. Long story, but I had sinus surgery and ear drum replacement done in the past, so it was definitely not good. In addition, I started to feel pain in my chest area for awhile, resulting in a cough and eventually had pleurisy. All of this caused me to miss more days of work due to the infections, not just because of the RA. It was an ugly cycle and in between all the antibiotics to fight off the infections, I was on prednisone to fight off flares that started up as well. One doctor already advised me to get off the Humira because it is so potent. So as of right now, I am waiting to see a new Rheumatologist, so I can find out what other options I have now. I have already tried Methotrexate, Sulfasalazine(sp?) (had an allergic reaction to both), and now Humira.
Lately, my RA has changed, the fatigue and pain has actually gotten worse. Oh, as for working full-time again, that has changed, too.

Thanks for the info. My question to you and all of you who has given me an answer, do you guys all go on a reg. bases, such as I go every 3months and I have blood work every three months My doc. is great they watch me very close and are well on top of all changes with me . I am going to read upon the Remicade and think it over after my trip to Pittsburge Pa. Thats where they are sending me for my knee which stays flared all the time. If it were not for this damn right knee I do great on the Humria, maybe once a year I have a really really bad flare up, but with my knee staying in full flare it seems to hit me every where. I'm really tired of the R/A stuff and I soon hope they get me back on track, and do something with this knee ,very painful. Good Luck with your R/A and I hope everything works out for you.

Well, I sure hope you feel better soon and your knee improves. I can definitely relate to it, just be careful. I actually found out about my RA after a series of serious falls. My knees and ankles were so swollen, after being on crutches for awhile, I fell down some stairs and fractured my left foot and tore ligaments and tendons in my left ankle!
It later required two separate surgeries and an ankle reconstruction.
As for how often I receive the Humira, I used to go to the infusion clinic every two weeks, then they changed it to once a week. Now, actually I do the injections at home on my own every two weeks. Isn't Remicade an IV infusion biologic drug?
Good luck and hope all works out for you, too.

Yes i travel to atlanta every 3 months for check ups and blood work. I was diagnosed with RA in 1994, at the age of 33. I had just started a business and had everything going good in my life. I finally gave up the barbering business in 2001. My hands, wrist, and feet just couldn't take it anymore. Now it's disability and i feel my life has just been sucked away from me. I still have goo and bad days. Always waiting for the good ones to arrive. I have lived with chronic pain since 1994 so my heart goes out to you. I have found a pain management doc here where i live, after years of percocet, lortabs and ultram we will see where he takes it. Hope he has some good ideas, when it comes to pain, seems like all the docs i have seen just don't like to write those narcotic scripts. Too many people abusing them and getting them, especially people that don't need them in the first place. Makes it hard for us that desperately need them.
Hope your knee gets better and you feel like a spring chicken soon sweetie.

YESSSSSSSS! I have been on Humira, since I had my son, 5 years ago. It brought me out of my flare up. I do my shots once a week, because I felt the shot wearing off after a week, so my doc increased the dosage. I had tried Enbrel and had terrible side effects, both of my legs swelled up severely. It had the docs very worried because I have both knees and hips replaced when I was 12 yrs old. I have had arthritis for over 30 yrs (I was diagnosed at the age of 3). I have been doing pretty good for the past 5 years, I am having a flare up right now (as I previously mentioned the Humira got rid of my last flare up), so I don't know what they are going to have me do now. I had already tried numerous medications, even methotrexate (which I don't recommend), made me so sick to my stomache I couldn't eat anything!! I have an appt next week, so if anyone has any other recommendations, please let me know. Good Luck!

Hey,
I had been really skeptical about injecting myself at home. The doctor tried to put me on it for 2 yrs, I started seeing another dr and he suggested the humria. I have only taken one dose, but it is helping. I have more flexibility.
There will always be good and bad days. I have not had any problems so far. I do NOT recommend the methotrexate. It is a form of chemotherapy, I took it for 2 1/2 years, it made me sick to my stomach. Best wishes
