Did anybody else has a surgery because of RA before?
Hi - I had a tendon transfer/reconstruction of the posterior tibial tendon in my right foot & ankle. I had developed chronic tendinitis during the period before my diagnosis, and cortisone treatment of the tendon actually weakened it further, as far as I was concerned, but I couldn't get that through to the podiatrist. I went from the podiatrist to an orthopedic surgeon who didn't recommend surgery at that time, but eventually prescribe me an ankle-foot orthotic. That helped for about 3 years, then it just didn't work anymore. If I hadn't had the RA, usually 1 1/2 years and someone is back in supportive shoes, maybe with an orthotic. I finally went to a lower limb specialist in orthopedic surgery and he did a good job. I'm doing well, but it took longer than I expected to really "get going."
I've had major damage even before diagnosis, in my right hand/wrist, and have been going on & off about what or when to do surgery. It seems now to be starting up in my left, and so I'm taking my time, because having a cast on for 6 weeks, even for my thumb on one hand, will put a lot more stress on the other hand. Two hands are better than one! But I sure wish all doors had LEVER door handles, instead of the usual knobs! (Grip/twist/pull-push - MOAN/GROAN!)

I am a nurse and I am 40. I have had three knee surgeries...2 of them total knee replacements before I was 40..it is very hard to fight this disease, especially when it attacks your joints and bones...The main thing is that you have an excellent ortho guy..that's worth alot. Just keep up with the right people and you will do good...thinking of you because I understand what it is like being young and tackling this disease.
