Has your doctor referred you to a rheumatologist?  If not you need to ask him to and make sure that he knows about your family history.  RA can cause significant damage and if you have it you need to start medication for it immediately.  The sooner you start treatment for RA, the greater chance you have to keep your mobility.  Never be scared to talk to your doctor.  That being said, a rheumatoid factor can be indicative of many different things including a viral infection.  Voice your concerns with your doctor.  If you see a rheumatologist they can definitely let you know whether it is RA or not.  Good luck and best wishes!

First, don't panic.  Yes, I know that's hard not to, considering the rate of RA your family.  You need more information - the saying is right, information really is power. Go to your doctor, talk to him/her and get a referral to a rheumatologist who can assess whether you have RA and will be able to discuss treatment options with you.  Poke about on this site to get information and questions that you can bring to the appointment.  If you do have RA, it's a good idea to establish a good team with your specialist from the beginning.  Feel free to come back here to ask more questions and please let us know how things are going.
