Q: I want to stop taking Methotrexate but my Dr. told me if you stop Methotrexate and then try to start it up later, it won't work a second time. Has anyone else heard that?

I want to stop taking Methotrexate and continue with Remicade only but my Dr. told me if you stop Methotrexate and then try to start it up later, it won't work a second time. Has anyone else heard that? I have been taking methotrexate for 7 months (8 pills) but it wasn't until I started Remicade that I found any relief. I would like to discontinue Metho and it's ugly side effects and see how it is with Remicade only.

Hi,

Honestly, I don't know the answer to your question. BUT, what I do know is that these medications are usually used in combination. So if you're having relief now, if you quit taking the methotrexate, it may rebound. Espesially since you're on a pretty high dose of MTX.

If your issue is with the side effects of the Methotrexate, you might consider asking your doctor about injecting it instead. For me, that has worked out very well.
