Saturday, August 20, 2011 Scooby asks

Q: Has anyone with RA used a hyperbaric air chambler before? I tried it last year and flared. I'm trying it again to see how I do. Any hints on how to keep the flaring at a minimum? Thanks

I had stage III rectal cancer (cancer free right now!!) but continue to have some "plumbing issues" after 2 years of being worked on. I take 1.0 ml liquid methotrexate injections each week, daily Celebrex, and 10 mg prednisone each day just to keep moving.

to be honest, I know nothing about this. I wish I could be of more help, but I wouldn't even knowwhere to begin to look for answers. I'd recommend that you speak to your rheumatologist about this.

Why were you using the hyperbaric air chamber?

I had radiation treatment almost 2 years ago for rectal cancer.  Radiation destroys the blood flow and tissue in the area that it is directed to....kills the cancer but it also kills everything else.  The effects of radiation are usually lifelong.  I am using the hyperbaric oxygen chamber to try to reestablish oxygen flow, blood flow, and tissue in the rectal area that has been damaged.  The rheumatologist said to increase the prednisone so I take some when I get out of the "chamber".  Doing OK so far!  RA and cancer are a slow healing, mysterious, balancing act.

Will Do!  While "walking the halls of cancer" the last 4 years I have met lots of people with RA and other immune deficiency diseases that have developed cancer.  Please stay vigilent on all of your routine medical tests.  And get that colonscopy at the first sign of anything "different"....it could save your life!

I definitely will!

would you be willing at some point writer a SharePost about your experience with RA and cancer? we try to on a regular basis to remind our users how important it is to get those checkups, but hearing it from somebody who's actually lived it could be really useful for our community.

I would be delighted.  Do you have another email that I can send it to so that y'all can review it before it is posted?  I don't want to scare people....Just because it happened to me doesn't mean it will happen to someone else :)
