Is Nitorfurantoin safe for pregnant women?

MsMicheleM
03/27/09

I was told I have a bacterial infection in my bladder and was prescribed Nitrofurantoin MCR 100 mg. CMYL, and I am supposed to take it 2X daily for 7 days. Is this safe pregnant women? I am 5-6 weeks pregnant. Please help! I want to make sure it doesn't harm my baby. Nitrofurantoin is a generic for Macrodantin.

Michele,

Nitrofurantoin is a category B drug, see explanation of a category B drug below:

Either animal-reproduction studies have not demonstrated a fetal risk but there are no controlled studies in pregnant women, or animal-reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect (other than a decrease in fertility) that was not confirmed in controlled studies in women in the first trimester (and there is no evidence of a risk in later trimesters).

Michele, bottom line is the drug mongraph states that it should not be used in the first trimester of pregnancy, only later.
