Is it possible to have RA if rheumatoid factor is in normal range?

I am 35 and recently had blood work done.  My father had RA in his thirties. I have had joint pain (but no swelling) for a few years now.  It seems to be getting worse.  My ANA came back positive but my rheumatoid factor was in normal range.  Can I have RA with a normal rheumatoid factor?  I'm worried and can not get in with a rheumatologist for over a month.

absolutely - approximately 20% of people who have RA are seronegative, which means that they are RA factor is normal. We have an excellent post on lab results that can tell you more about the different blood tests, including RA factor.

Try calling the rheumatologist's office and request to be put on the cancellation list, which may get you into see the doctor sooner. You can also make an appointment to see your primary care physician and discuss painkillers that can help you until you can see the rheumatologist. I'm tempted to suggest that you ask for a small dose of prednisone, as it can help turn down the disease a bit, but I think it's important that you present as untreated a picture to the rheumatologist as possible so they can get a true center where you're at, healthwise.
