Q: Help finding a pain doctor in Ga?

Hi every one I just moved to georgia from florida about 4 months ago and since I moved to ga I havent been getting the care I did in florida. When I was in florida I had a good RA doctor and a good Pain doctor and now I have to start all over. I suffer from RA,FM, a bad back and pain that runs down my legs in my ankles and down to my feet and it is getting harder to walk. I pretty much lay in bed all day and I am a mother of 4 kids and right now I can not do anything for them thank god for my mother and my boyfriend cause if it wasnt for them the state would take my kids. I hate living like this I feel like I am in prison in my own body and if it wasnt for my kids I would have ended all this pain and suffering cause this is know way for a person to live. Befour I moved here I was on pain meds for 3 years and when I tell the doctors how much pain I am in they treat me like I am crazy or a drug seeker one doctor even said he dont give people dope. I wanted to bust out in tears because that comment made me feel like a junkie and I knew I wasnt gonna get nothing to help with this horiable pain. I was hoping that maybe someone may know of a good

Hello, Alice,

I am so sorry you are in this position right now.  Doctors are really getting touchy about prescribing pain meds.  Did yo go to a GP or a rheumatologist?

Did the new doctor you saw have your medical records? If not, I think you need to call your previous doctor in the state where you used to live and ask him/her to transfer your medical records to a rheumatologist there where you now live.  I really think any doctor would want to see your records before prescribing pain meds.

You really need to find a rheumatologist.  Is there a teaching hospital anywhere close to where you live now?

I am so sorry you are in so much pain right now.  I really hope you can find a good rheumatologist soon.

Please let uns know how you are doing.

Peace,

V

I went to my GP and he told me he dont give out dope and I am sorry but I think that if a person really needs meds then it is not dope it is only dope when a person abuses the meds or doesnt have any reason to take them. I asked him to refer me to a rheumatologist and he said there wasnt one around that took my insurance so I went to a pain doctor who did and he just gave me a bunch of stuff that I have been on befour that doesnt work. I was just gonna go to a pain clinic that dont take my insurance and just pay out of pocket I really dont have the money to do that but it seems the ones that do take insurance are the most uptight about given pain meds. It just makes me angry and feel hopless cause they all do have my records and all seen that I have been on pain meds for 3 years. They have my blood work and my Mri's all backing up what I have told them I have no history of abussing meds so I have no clue what there issues are here but in fl I never had any problems getting what I needed to get by and that made it alot easier to get by and live with all the pain. I think its just because when you have pain that cant be seen on the outside they feel they have the right to tell people that they arent in pain or can tell you just how much pain you are in. This makes living in pain so much harder but I am doing all I can but it is really hard because I am new to georgia and I dont know anyone here so that is why I thought I would try on-line.

Hi, Alice,

When I am looking for a new doc, I search online for a GP or Rheumatologist, etc.  You can type in your zip code and choose how many miles away from your home you want to include in your search.  After you find the doctors who practice in that geographical area, you can call each of them up, and they usually list what type of insurance they take.  Have you tried this, Alice?

I'm so sorry you're having a hard time after you move. Finding a good doctor is difficult and these days, it's hard to find a doctor who will actually believe you're in pain.

I have a couple of suggestions for you. Check out the website of the American College of Rheumatologistsyou to see if you can find a specialist in your area. You can also check out RateMDs, a website that has both a function that help you find doctors in your area, as well as patient ratings for that. Just remember to take the ratings with a grain of salt - people who've had a negative experience tend to post more than people who've had a good one. I'd also suggest you start having a chat with people like your hairdresser, the members of your church, the parents of your kids' classmates, etc. Did your mother move with you or did she already live in Georgia? If she's been there for a while, she probably has friends who know of with doctors, as well. When you do find a family doctor, ask for a referral to a good rheumatologist, as well as a pain specialist..

you can also check out the website for Arthritis Introspective, an organization that helps people start support groups for people living with arthritis, as well as keeping a list of existing support systems. They may have a listing for a support group in your area and then you could get information straight from people who live with arthritis.

Good luck! Please keep us posted on how things go?
