Q: Rheumatoid Arthritis and risk of blood clots while taking Birth Control pills

Hello, My Internist tries to get me to go off BC pills because I have a form of Rheumatoid Arthritis (negative factor) called Palendromic Rheumatism. She says the RA doubles my chance of having blood clots. Is there a link between RA and BC Pill blood clots? Thanks

I'm not a doctor, so I am not up on the research related to this. However, when you have RA, you may have a higher risk of certain diseases and conditions (to my understanding, this includes heart attack and stroke) and it's quite possible that there is an interaction between birth control pills and blood clots. As well, when you have RA, you are more likely to be more sedentary and this can increase the risk of side effects from taking birth control pills.

I suggest that you make another appointment and with your doctor and asked her to give you more detailed information about the risks so you can make an informed decision about what is best for you. While you're there, ask for counseling on alternative birth control methods.
