Thursday, January 07, 2010 sylvia asks

Q: I just had a bad flare up of my Rheumatoid Arthritis, I had a blood test and my esr level was at 49,

is this high, my RA was totally under control with Arava, but then I hurt myself, and had a bad flare up, a lot of pain in my hands, feet, swollen ankles, sore knees.

Hopefully my meds will kick in again soon, and I can go back to the relife I had before my injury.

what are the answers living well with RA is managing your energy in order to prevent activity-related flares. Of course, sometimes when you overdo and pay for it later, it's worth it. Smile

However, I'd recommend that you contact your rheumatologist to ask for some help. It's possible that they would be able to give your prescription for prednisone to help you heal or they may increase your Arava.

Hi Slyvia!

 I believe the average ESR levels are;

Women under 50 years old: less than 20 mm/hr is normal

Women over 50 years old: less than 30 mm/hr is normal

I don't know what age you are, but it looks like your inflammation isn't to horribly bad. It looks likes it's up somewhat though!
