Q: I need some help, badly

Just after Christmas I developed a really sore neck and shoulders, I thought it was just the pressure of Christmas, however it just kept getting worse, my GP sent me for an xray and discovered I had degenerated discs in my neck, so she sent me for Physio, I am still going with no improvement, I can hardly hold my head up with out a neck brace, I am waiting for an MRI, but could take a while, I have an Appt. with my Rheumy tomorrow, so I am praying she will be able to help me. I am on Humira, Arava and Prednisone, and nothing is helping, I am also taking Tylenol 3.

I am so scared the RA is affecting the bones in my neck.

I go over to England next month to visit my daughter and Grandchildren, for three weeks, so I just keep praying that this pain will stop.

Have any of you had a similar situation? and what was the out come, and as if that wasn't bad enough I now have a lung infection, and are on antibiotics.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sylvia,

I haven't experienced the same thing as you.  I hope that your rheumy has some good ideas.  It would be great for you to be able to enjoy your trip to England.  Please let us know how the appontment goes.

RA affects anything that the joints and that includes the bones in your neck. It's one of the reasons that people with RA need to be very careful about using e.g., chiropractors, because our bones, especially our spines, can be much more vulnerable to damage. I'm so sorry that you're experiencing this and I understand how scary it must be.

The good news is that as things go, is not a super rare thing that no one knows what to do with - degenerated discs are fairly common, for people with RA and those without. I don't know what the doctors will recommend, although surgery may be an option. Again, it sounds really scary, but try to remember that many people have had this kind of surgery and have returned to leading good, productive lives.

I recently found a website about spine health that has a lot of good information about various conditions related to your spine. I'd recommend that you do a lot of research, put together a list of questions to bring to your appointment - knowledge is power and the more prepared and knowledgeable you are, the more likely it is that you will leave that appointment feeling better about what happened in it.

please do keep us posted on what happens?
