Q: Question about Enbrel

I recently started Enbrel (3 weeks ago).  I'm also taking metho and lodine.  I'm starting to notice some differences, but was wondering approximately how long before I have pain free days?  Is that ever going to happen?  I live with some degree of pain every day of my life.  Sometimes it's manageable, but now my hips are hurting.  Like your ankles, it's really hard to do anything when your hips hurt.  Does anyone have any idea about how long before the enbrel really helps?  Also, I keep hearing people talk about being on prednisone.  What's the benefit?  How does it work w/other meds to reduce flares?  Does it cause you to gain weight?

Enbrel can take upto 3 months to work. I have never been completely pain-free on enbrel, sure one day I may not have any pain but the next I will. Also not everyone responds to the meds the same way.  After 4 years I just found the right combo of enbrel twice a week and arava and most days I feel almost good.  Pred really helps really fast,  I have only used it as a quick fix.  My father has pmr and it isthe only drug that works so he takes it for a long time and the side effects are bothersome (he gets nasty after two weeks and I have 4 kids)  But if you are in enough pain I suggest asking your dr. about taking it.

Hope's description almost mirrors my experience with Enbrel. I started feelings changes withing 2-3 weeks and things progressively got better over the next couple of months. My doc says after three months you should have a good idea about how it works. Having energy again was the first indication for me. It's given me back my life but as Hope indicates, there are still ups and downs and prednisone helps on those days (like yesterday!). Even on Enbrel I live with joint pain but I can tell a huge difference.

I pray that relief kicks in for you real soon!
