Q: When will the pain stop.

I have been trying SO hard to be strong in this. I have been through months of pain meds, months of tests, months of people thinking I am crazy and whining. When will the pain stop? I have one more week till my second RA dr visit and I am about out of my mind. I am on Demerol. Is that not enough of a pain med? Anyone else have so much trouble just blocking the pain? I don't want to do anything, I don't care about anything anymore. I read about drugs and how they take months to work, is there nothing that can stop it now?

An untreated RA flare can bring you to your knees (except it would hurt your knees too much). You're having unreasonable pain - call your doctor as soon as possible and ask for help. Remember that your doctor is being paid to help you, so don't hesitate to call in between appointments and you may also request an emergency appointment if things get really bad. Yes, medications that suppress your RA can take months to help, depending on the medication, although some work faster than others. However, it's quite possible that your doctor will put you on prednisone to help bridge the gap while you wait for the other meds to kick in and he may also prescribe anti-inflammatories, which in my experience can be more helpful than regular painkillers, although you may still need something stronger to supplement.

You don't have to live like this. And once you get treatment, there is every chance that your life will improve. You may still have pain, but the goal of treatment is to get that pain down to a dull roar that's manageable so you can get back to living your life. Hang in there and ask you rheumatologist for help.

((coveting your demerol!))

Gosh Brad, I know the desperation. I'm glad you have a rheumy appt coming up. Hopefully you'll get to problem-solve with the doc. I do know that this first year has been rough rough rough, and it sounds like it's hitting you pretty hard. Dang.

You are right: Demerol is pretty powerful. Maybe Fentynl patches? I don't know, but I just wanted to give you a big ol hug and say "poor baby!"

I know it is hard to be strong but we have no choice with the hand we were dealt.I have had ra for 8 years and i still whine every day and i feel like i AM going crazy if you r still in pain after the pain meds the dr gave u tell him they dont help.He will adjust your meds. I am on 15 different meds and i still have the pain but again that is where we have to be strong. I hope your dr can help u with the pain and frustration i hope u feel better soon

I sympathise with you Brad.  I too have been suffering for over a year.  I started Methotrexate last December and they gave me prednisolone to bridge until the drugs kicked in.  After 2 weeks I had to stop the steroid because of stomach problems.  I only have paracetomol and ibofuren and they ease pain a little but do not stop it completely.  I am so crippled some days, I cannot walk, yet they tell you to keep exercising.

I have had to continue working as I have my own business so I have no choice.  On top of this I had breast cancer and then a massive embolism in my main artery caused by the radio therapy.  I feel like my life is not my own anymore.  I'm slowly giving up the will to carry on.
