Q: New to R.A./methotrexate/burning sensation

I was diagnosed with R.A. 5 weeks ago and have been taking Methotrexate 15 mg orally. For the past 4 days I've had a mild burning sensation in my chest/lungs that I have never had before. My doctor listened to me breath and didn't hear anything. Any ideas ?

It may or not be related to the MTX. If it continues there are options to MTX, such as Arava and Plaquinel. Also be aware breathing issues can be a side affect of many RA drugs. Keep after your doc if you don't get relief from it.

Thanks for answering. I've looked all over the internet and can't find anything that relates. It's like I breathed in some awful chemical fumes and my lungs are irratated, although I did not.

Soon after starting Arava I did come down with pneumonia, but your doc would have caught that. Don't know what to tell you, if it persists, keep after your doc! Hope you feel better soon.

I was on mxt a long time ago. What you are feeling is a possible side effect which I had and still have is acid reflux. MXT is actually a cancer drug, it does work with helping to control ra. Talk to your doctor about it some more, ask him if it could possibly be acid reflux.
