Q: Is anything I can take, prescription or otherwise, to help with my fatigue?

I do not like coffee and stay away from soft drinks and the "energy drinks" on the market kind of scare me. I have experimented with "natural" stimulants, but none of them seem to work for more than a very brief period.

I have been living with RA for over 8 years now and the fatigue has only now become a big issue for me. I am 34 and feel like I am 74 some days. It is not unusual for me to go to bed at 11 pm, wake up and make breakfast, eat and go back to bed until noon or later.

I need to do something. I can't continue to do this and make a living. Any help would be very much appreciated.

If your fatigue is new, I would recommend senior rheumatologist for a checkup. Although fatigue can be part of living with RA, if you are have experienced a change in your condition, it could be a sign of your disease flaring. Or perhaps the medication you're on is not working as well as it should. You may also want to get a physical from your family doctor, just to make sure that your thyroid levels are good (if your thyroid is out of whack, you can get very tired) and that you are not anemic.

You may also want to try supplementing your current medical care with alternative medicine such as acupuncture or seeing a licensed naturopathic doctor who may be able to help you with supplements.
