Rheumatoid Arthritis Drug Information

Once you've been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, your doctor may prescribe a specific drug regimen specific to your needs. Find out more about the various medications available to RA sufferers today.

Featured
  • Vioxx (rofecoxib) Drug Information
The removal of Vioxx (rofecoxib), a COX-2 non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), from the market was the largest prescription-drug withdrawal in history. Merck, the drug's manufacturer, removed Vioxx from the market after studies showed it caused severe heart and cardiovascular problems, including heart attack and stroke. Learn more about Vioxx, its uses and its side effects and the studies that led to its banishment.
  • Celebrex (celecoxib) Drug Information
Celebrex is the last COX-2 anti-inflammatory drug on the market after the voluntary withdrawal of Vioxx and Bextra. Learn about Celebrex's uses, side effects and drug interactions here.
  • Tylenol Oral
This drug is used to treat mild to moderate pain (e.g., headaches, cold/flu aches and pains) and to reduce fever.

  • Arava Oral
This medication is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, a condition in which the body's defense system (immune system) fails to recognize the body as itself and attacks the healthy tissues around the joints. Leflunomide helps to reduce the joint damage/pain/swelling and helps you to move better. It works by weakening your immune system and decreasing swelling (inflammation).
  • Azulfidine Oral
Sulfasalazine is used to treat a certain type of bowel disease called ulcerative colitis. This medication does not cure this condition, but it helps decrease symptoms such as fever, stomach pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. After an attack is treated, sulfasalazine is also used to increase the amount of time between attacks. This medication works by reducing irritation and swelling in the large intestines.
  • Cytoxan Oral
Cyclophosphamide is used to treat various types of cancer. It is a chemotherapy drug that works by slowing or stopping cell growth.
  • Imuran Oral
Azathioprine is used with other medications to prevent rejection of a kidney transplant. It works by weakening your body's defense system (immune system) to help your body accept the new kidney as if it were your own. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as immunosuppressants.
  • Rituxan IV
Rituximab is used alone or with other medications to treat certain types of cancer (e.g., non-Hodgkin's lymphoma). It is a type of medication called a monoclonal antibody. It works by attaching to certain blood cells from your immune system (B cells) and killing them. It is also used with other monoclonal antibodies and radioactive drugs to treat certain cancers.
  • Remicade IV
This medication is used to treat certain types of arthritis (rheumatoid arthritis, arthritis of the spine, psoriatic arthritis), certain bowel diseases (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis), and a certain severe skin disease (chronic plaque psoriasis). In these conditions, the body's defense system (immune system) attacks healthy tissues. Infliximab works by blocking the actions of a certain natural substance (tumor necrosis factor alpha) in the body. This helps to decrease swelling (inflammation) and weaken your immune system, thereby slowing or stopping the damage from the disease.
  • Humira SubQ
This medication is used to reduce pain and swelling due to certain types of arthritis (e.g., rheumatoid, psoriatic, and ankylosing spondylitis). This medication is also used to treat psoriasis (plaque-type). It works by blocking a protein (tumor necrosis factor or TNF) found in the body's immune system that causes joint swelling and damage.
  • Rheumatrex Oral
Methotrexate is used to treat certain types of cancer or to control severe psoriasis or rheumatoid arthritis. This medication works by interfering with cell growth and by suppressing the immune system.
  • Ridaura Oral
This medication is used as part of a complete treatment program including non-drug therapies (e.g., rest, physical therapy) to treat active rheumatoid arthritis. It is used to treat patients with severe rheumatoid arthritis who have not responded to or cannot take other medications. Auranofin is a gold compound.
  • Enbrel SubQ
This medication is used alone or in combination with an immunosuppressant (e.g., methotrexate) to treat certain types of arthritis (e.g., rheumatoid, psoriatic, and ankylosing spondylitis), as well as a skin condition called psoriasis. These conditions are caused by an overactive immune system (autoimmune disease). The immune system attacks the body's own healthy cells, causing inflammation in the joints and skin.
  • Kineret SubQ
This medication is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis that has not improved with other drugs (disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs-DMARDs). Anakinra slows the worsening of rheumatoid arthritis by preventing a certain protein (interleukin-1) from causing more damage. This effect may reduce pain, swelling, and tenderness in your joints, allowing you to do your normal activities.
  • Sandimmune Oral
This medication is used to prevent organ rejection in people who have received a liver, kidney, or heart transplant. It is usually taken along with other medications to allow your new organ to function normally. Cyclosporine is also used to treat severe rheumatoid arthritis and a certain skin condition (severe psoriasis). Cyclosporine belongs to a class of drugs known as immunosuppressants. It works by slowing down your body's defense system (immune system) to prevent your body from rejecting a transplanted organ, further damaging your joints (in rheumatoid arthritis patients), or further damaging your skin (in psoriasis patients). For the treatment of psoriasis or arthritis, it is generally used to treat people who cannot take other medications or have not found relief from other treatments.
  • Plaquenil Oral
Hydroxychloroquine is used to prevent or treat malaria infections caused by mosquito bites. It does not work against certain types of malaria (chloroquine-resistant). The United States Center for Disease Control provides updated guidelines and travel recommendations for the prevention and treatment of malaria in different parts of the world. Discuss the most recent information with your doctor before traveling to areas where malaria occurs.
  • Minocin Oral
Minocycline is used to treat a wide variety of infections, including acne. This medication belongs to the class of antibiotics known as tetracyclines. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
  • Deltasone Oral
Prednisone is a corticosteroid hormone (glucocorticoid). It decreases your immune system's response to various diseases to reduce symptoms such as swelling and allergic-type reactions. It is used to treat conditions such as arthritis, blood disorders, breathing problems, certain cancers, eye problems, immune system diseases, and skin diseases.
