Waking up during surgery common: study

U.S. researchers have found that waking up during surgery is surprisingly common, affecting 1-in-500 surgical cases. The scientists say becoming conscious during general anesthesia is an extremely distressing condition, and it can lead to post-operative psychological trauma and contribute to patients' fear of surgery. There are a number of so-called "candidate awareness monitors" available that can be used to know when patients are awakening during surgery. However, recent research suggests that awakening may be prevented by anesthesiologists and doctors implementing a simple "increased vigilance" protocol.
