RA drugs may fight swine flu

Scientists say rheumatoid arthritis (RA) drugs that suppress the immune system may one day be used to fight flu viruses, including the H1N1 (swine) flu. In a new study, scientists working with mice gave the animals a lethal dose of the influenza A virus, then gave some of the mice the RA drug Orencia.The researchers found that 80 percent of the mice given Orencia lived, compared to 50 percent of the mice who did not receive the drug. Investigators say their experiment may have implications not only for the seasonal flu, but for outbreaks of unusual flu viruses such as the swine flu.  Read full story >
