RA patients' treatment outlook differs by race

Yale researchers have found that white and African American patients do not see the risks and benefits of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatments the same way. RA treatment decisions are often complex, requiring a constant trade-off of symptom relief, side effects, and the risk of serious complications related to the medications' use. In a new study, scientists found that African American RA patients were more concerned with toxicity issues from the meds, as well as with their cancer risks. Conversely, white patients were more concerned about disability and the medications' benefits for controlling the progress of their RA. Investigators say their finding may explain why African American RA patients are less likely to receive aggressive RA treatment than their white counterparts.
