Acetaminophen needs tougher warnings, FDA says

Only a month after mandating new warning labels for the painkiller acetaminophen, officials at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) say the pain med needs even tougher standards to protect consumers from liver damage and accidental overdose. FDA experts will be meeting in late June to discuss stronger warnings, better consumer education, and limits on doses for both prescription acetaminophen and over-the-counter acetaminophen such as Tylenol. Officials say consumers are not aware that severe liver damage can occur from taking too much of the medication. Consumers also may not know that the pain drug is an ingredient in many other over-the-counter remedies--including cold medicines--and this can lead to accidental overdose.
