Herb may help autoimmune diseases

Scientists working with mice have found that a compound made from hydrangea root stopped the progression of an autoimmune disease in the animals. In their study, researchers gave the compound--called halofuginone--to mice with experimental autoimmune encephalitis, an artificially induced immune disease that resembles multiple sclerosis (MS) in humans. The investigators found that the herbal drug was able to halt the progression of the disease without suppressing normal immune functioning. A major problem with current treatments for autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and MS is an increased risk for infections because the medicines suppress the immune system.
