Obama may limit medical malpractice lawsuits

President Obama told members of the American Medical Association (AMA) that imposing limits on medical malpractice lawsuits may be a "necessary part" of healthcare reform. Obama told the group that he believes reducing the amount of unnecessary tests and procedures would also help cut health costs, since it would reduce the chance of medical malpractice claims. The president is not advocating a limit on malpractice awards, however, since he believes such a move would be unfair to people who have already been wrongfully harmed. Instead, he advocates shifting the emphasis from the "quantity of treatment to the quality of care."
