FDA seizes generic maker's drugs

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has seized all supplies from Michigan-based generic drug maker Caraco, a move that affects 33 medications and could lead to a shortage of one painkiller. The FDA made this move after Caraco failed to meet its current Good Manufacturing Practice requirements, which assure the quality of manufactured drugs. Caraco makes generic versions of cardiac, psychiatric, and pain medications, including the painkiller choline magnesium trisalicylate, which could become scarce due to the FDA's move. Officials say only a small percentage of patients take this painkiller, and they should discuss alternatives with their doctors should shortages arise.
