EU wants Darvocet off the market

European drug regulators say the painkiller Darvocet (dextropropoxyphene, propoxyphene) should be pulled off the market because patients using the drug have been dying from overdoses. The pain med was first introduced in the United States in 1957 and sold under the name Darvon. Since then, it has been prescribed in both the United States and overseas for mild to moderate pain. But European regulators say a "significant" number of people in Europe have died from either accidental or intentional overdoses of Darvoct, and it should be taken off the market. The painkiller is still being sold in the United States, but officials at the Food and Drug Administration are considering whether to remove it from the market as well.  Read full story >
