Drugmakers defend acetaminophen as FDA considers limits

Makers of over-the-counter cold and flu products that contain the painkiller acetaminophen say their products should remain on the market despite concerns from U.S. regulators. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is debating whether or not to ban products that contain cough and cold remedies and acetaminophen because of a possible risk of liver damage linked to the pain med. Proctor & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, and other makers of these products provide a "clear public health benefit" and should not be banned, but they do agree that consumers should be warned about acetaminophen's liver damage risks.
