Doctors judge patients by their looks, studies show

Several studies have found that doctors treat patients differently depending on their race and body weight. For example, in a 2005 study, researchers found that African American cardiac patients were were less likely than whites to receive a lifesaving procedure to restore the flow of oxygen to the heart, even though all of the patients were on Medicare, which covers the procedure. And in a 2007 study, doctors were more likely to recommend lifesaving treatment for a patient in a case study if the patient's case was paired with a photo of a white man rather than a black man. Another study published this summer found that more than 40 percent of the doctors surveyed had a negative reaction to obese people.  Read full story >
