Experts doubt 'toning shoe' claims

Makers of "toning shoes" claim wearers can tone their body and ease some conditions just by walking in the shoes, but doctors and other medical experts aren't sure these claims are true. Toning shoes generally have large pods or curves on the bottom to create instability, which shoemakers say increase the wearer's leg, glute, and calf muscle activity by about 11 to 41 percent. But medical experts say there have been no independent or legitimate studies to support the claims that these shoes can increase fitness or treat conditions such as back pain, poor posture, or obesity as their makers claim.  Read full story >
