Placebos truly reduce pain: study

German researchers have found that placebos--fake medications designed to help patients' expectations of feeling better--may truly relieve pain. In their study, the scientists found that a patient's simple expectation that a treatment would relieve his or her pain appeared to act as a painkiller. Researchers say the body's own opioids, which are produced in the brain, are released into the body when placebo drugs are taken. The investigators say these naturally occurring painkillers may block pain processing in the spinal cord and brain, leading to an actual reduction in patients' pain.
