New RA drug meets goals in new trial

A drug being developed to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA) was found to work at treating the condition in a new trial. The med, currently known as CP-690,550,, was effective as both a stand-alone treatment and as a combination therapy with methotrexate, the standard therapy for the disease, scientists say. The drug is one of new class of drugs known as oral JAK inhibitors, which are being tested for their effects on enzymes linked to inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.
