Fight fair: Words may ease health impact of arguing

Couples who use cognitive words during an argument may be helping their own and their partner's health, a new study has found. Fighting has been shown to increase cytokines in the body--proteins that have been linked to heart problems, Type 2 diabetes, arthritis, and some cancers. But a study of 42 couples found that those who used words such as "think," "because," "reason," and "why," had lower levels of cytokines than couples who didn't use cognitive words. Experts say that's because these words indicate that a person is being thoughtful about a difficult topic.
